Nigerian Enu-Aku oil (or Ude Aki, Nmanu Aki, or Ude Aki in Igbo) is a traditional, unrefined oil extracted from the kernels of the palm fruit (Elaeis guineensis). Often dark brown (or black) due to traditional heat extraction, it is heavily used for hair growth, skin moisturising, treating infections, and cooking. It is sometimes called African Batana oil.

Key Aspects of Enu-Aku Oil:

  • Production: The kernel is dried and extracted, often using a traditional heating method, which makes it dark/black in colour.
  • Hair & Skin Benefits: It is a thick oil known for promoting hair growth, conditioning hair, and moisturising skin, often used as a natural, non-greasy, softening pomade.
  • Traditional Uses: It is used locally to treat convulsions in children, skin infections, and as a remedy for poisons.
  • Cooking: It has a strong, nutty flavour and is utilised in commercial cooking because it does not oxidise easily under high temperatures.

It is different from red palm oil (which is extracted from the pulp of the fruit), as it is taken from the seed found inside the palm nut.
