Nigerian Calabash Nutmeg, known locally in Nigeria as 'Ehuru' (Igbo), 'Ariwo' (Yoruba), or 'Airama' (Edo), is an aromatic, woody, and slightly peppery seed derived from the Monodora myristica tree. It is a staple West African spice used to enhance traditional soups, stews, pepper soup, and dishes like Nkwobi and Isi Ewu.

Key Details About Nigerian Calabash Nutmeg (Ehuru):

  • Flavour & Aroma: It has a warm, earthy, and mildly pungent flavour with a smoky aroma, which is often considered more intense and woodier than common nutmeg.
  • Preparation: It is best used by roasting the seed over a flame to crack the outer shell, removing the kernel, and grinding it into a powder, which releases a stronger flavour.
  • Culinary Uses: Widely used in Nigerian cuisine to elevate dishes such as pepper soup, banga soup, and tomato-based stews.
  • Medicinal Properties: In traditional medicine, it is used to manage headaches, treat constipation, improve digestive health, and provide anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Health Benefits: It is rich in potassium, iron, manganese, and calcium.
It is often mistaken for or used as a substitute for nutmeg, but it is technically a different species, sometimes referred to as African or Jamaican nutmeg.
